The Lightning Golf Tournament is our first-ever high-energy golf experience built around speed, strategy, teamwork, and community. Join us for an exciting new event benefiting youth health, wellness, and sports programs around Lynchburg. Teams of four will compete across 18 holes, with the flexibility to choose your playing mode.
Play Mode: Split 2-Player
The Split Two-Man Team Challenge adds a fast-paced, strategic team element to the LAYSI Lightning Golf Tournament. Teams will tee off at 7:30 p.m. and complete their round using a golf cart, with each hole timed individually.
In this format, players are timed during each hole only, not while traveling between holes. Teams can split up and position one player down the fairway while the other tees off, allowing the next shot to be taken as soon as the ball lands. This creates a fun, competitive format that rewards communication, strategy, speed, and accuracy.
The goal is to complete the course with the fastest total time and the fewest strokes. It’s a unique twist on tournament golf that challenges teams to think quickly, move efficiently, and work together from the first tee to the final putt.
Play Mode: 1-Player Marathon
The One-Man Marathon Challenge is a high-energy, endurance-style portion of the LAYSI Lightning Gold Tournament that combines speed, strategy, and golf skill. Each participant will tee off at 6:00 a.m. and complete a full 18-hole round while being timed from start to finish.
Unlike a traditional round of golf, this challenge is played without golf carts. Participants must run between holes and throughout play, balancing pace with accuracy as they work to finish as quickly as possible while also keeping their score low.
The goal is simple: complete all 18 holes with the fastest time and the fewest strokes. It’s part golf tournament, part endurance test, and all for a great cause.
Funds raised through the LAYSI Lightning Gold Tournament will support the Lynchburg Area Youth Sports Initiative (LAYSI), a community program that provides free sports opportunities for low-income youth in Lynchburg. LAYSI helps remove the barriers created by the “pay-to-play” model by offering no-cost pop-up clinics at Lynchburg’s six community centers when Lynchburg City Schools are not in session.
The program introduces children to a variety of sports, including baseball, basketball, football, lacrosse, tennis, track and field, and soccer. Clinics are led primarily by volunteer coaches and athletes from the University of Lynchburg, and participants also receive a free lunch. Tournament proceeds will also help support LAYSI’s annual Community Play Day, which brings together more than 100 local children and dozens of volunteers for a full day of sports, movement, and community connection.
